Marysville is a small mountain town in the Yarra Ranges of central Victoria, about 90 kilometres northeast of Melbourne, and the golf club here carries the particular character of a community that has been through something profound. The 2009 Black Saturday bushfires devastated Marysville almost entirely — the town lost the majority of its buildings and a significant number of its residents in one of Australia's worst natural disasters. The golf and bowls club, like so much of the town, was part of the long, determined process of rebuilding that followed.
That backstory matters when you play here, because the course sits within a landscape of regrowth — mountain ash and maidenhair fern reclaiming the hillsides, the bush returning in that vivid, almost urgent way it does in the Ranges. It is a community layout in the truest sense: modest in scale, maintained by the people who love it, and entirely without pretension.
For visitors making the trip from Melbourne — many of whom come to walk the Steavenson Falls or explore the broader Yarra Ranges — the club offers an honest, unhurried round in genuinely beautiful surroundings, with the warmth that small country clubs in Victoria do better than almost anywhere.
