Mitta Mitta Golf Club sits in the upper reaches of the Kiewa Valley, in a part of northeastern Victoria that most Australians drive through only on the way somewhere else. Eskdale is a genuinely small settlement — cattle country, river flats, and the kind of high-country quiet that makes city golfers blink and recalibrate. The Mitta Mitta River winds through this landscape, and the course takes its name from that waterway rather than the township itself, a telling sign of where the real character of the place comes from.
As with many rural Victorian clubs, this is almost certainly a layout shaped by volunteer hands and community effort over generations, probably running across fairly flat river-flat terrain before the hills close in around it. Expect natural turf conditions that reflect the season, greens kept by a small and dedicated membership, and absolutely no pretension whatsoever.
What a course like this offers is harder to quantify than any rating — unhurried golf in genuinely beautiful alpine-fringe country, with the kind of welcome that larger clubs have mostly forgotten how to give.
