Lake Oconee has quietly become one of Georgia's most compelling golf destinations, and Cuscowilla sits at the heart of that story. Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw and opened in 1997, the course is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of their naturalistic design philosophy in the American Southeast — routing holes through the rolling Piedmont terrain with a light touch that feels discovered rather than constructed. The land does the work here, and Coore & Crenshaw largely let it.
The par 70 layout is shorter than modern resort courses tend to be, but that's entirely by design. Crenshaw and Coore have always believed in playability and strategy over raw length, and Cuscowilla rewards shot-making and course management far more than power. Several holes run along or near the shores of Lake Oconee itself, giving the round a genuine sense of place and more than a few memorable views.
Eatonton sits in the Georgia Piedmont, midway between Atlanta and Augusta — close enough to both that serious golfers pass through regularly. The private residential community surrounding the course adds to the unhurried, members-first atmosphere that Coore & Crenshaw designs seem to attract.
