Few clubs on Long Island carry a résumé quite like Fresh Meadow's. Founded in the early 1920s and originally designed by Herbert Strong, the club hosted the U.S. Open in 1932 — the year Gene Sarazen put on one of the great closing-round performances in major championship history, shooting 66 to win by 3 shots. The club also hosted the PGA Championship in 1930. That pedigree alone places it among a very short list of courses in the New York metro area with genuine major-championship provenance.
The club relocated to its current home in Great Neck after its original Flushing site was sold, and the course was redesigned over time to suit its new grounds on the Nassau County North Shore. Great Neck sits along the Long Island Sound, a prosperous and golf-rich corner of the Island where the terrain rolls more than outsiders expect, with mature hardwoods defining fairways and adding both beauty and strategic bite.
As a private members' club, Fresh Meadow offers a quieter, unhurried experience — the kind of place where history lives in the fabric of the institution rather than on any signpost.
