Few courses in European golf carry the weight of expectation that the North Course at Quinta do Lago does. Part of the celebrated Quinta do Lago estate in the Algarve, the property has been one of Portugal's premier golf destinations since the 1970s, and the North Course — redesigned by Beau Winn and reopened in 2014 after a significant overhaul — represents the estate's most demanding test. It has hosted multiple Portuguese Opens and remains a benchmark for championship-standard parkland golf on the Iberian Peninsula.
The course winds through the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a protected coastal wetland that gives the layout a distinctive character — umbrella pines, cork oaks, and lakes define the landscape rather than the rugged clifftops that dominate further west along the Algarve coast. Several holes demand accurate approaches over water, and the closing stretch is genuinely pressure-testing, the kind of finish that separates a good round from a great one.
Almancil sits at the heart of the Golden Triangle, alongside Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura, and the surrounding infrastructure — warm winters, reliable sunshine, and world-class facilities — makes this corner of southern Portugal one of the most complete golf destinations anywhere in Europe.
