Perth's North Inch is one of Scotland's oldest public playing grounds, a flat parkland layout occupying the same stretch of riverside meadow where towering — and often chaotic — clan battles were once settled. The River Tay bounds the course, and the sense of open, common ground is very much part of the experience: this is golf as it existed before green fees and gatekeepers, a municipal course in the truest civic tradition, free or near-free to play and genuinely open to all.
As a par 68, North Inch is a shorter, more relaxed proposition than the region's more celebrated tests, leaning toward approach play and putting rather than raw power. The ground is level and the tree-lined fairways are forgiving in shape, making it a natural first stop for beginners, families, or anyone wanting an unhurried round without ceremony.
Perth itself sits at the gateway to the Scottish Highlands, and the surrounding landscape — the Tay, the hills rising beyond the city, the ancient parkland trees — gives even a casual loop here a quiet dignity that no scorecard can capture.
