Philip sits in the heart of Haakon County, deep in the South Dakota Badlands country where the landscape rolls and breaks in ways that feel almost confrontational. It's a genuinely remote part of the Great Plains — cattle ranches outnumber golfers by a wide margin out here, and finding a full 18-hole course in a town this size is itself a small surprise worth noting.
Lake Waggoner takes its name from the reservoir nearby, and like most rural South Dakota courses it likely leans on the natural contours of the surrounding prairie rather than manufactured drama. Expect open skies, persistent wind, and the kind of honest, unadorned golf that rural municipal courses in the Northern Plains do best — no pretense, just the game played against the elements.
For visiting golfers, the appeal is partly the rarity of it. Courses this far off the beaten path tend to be maintained by people who genuinely love the game, and a round here offers something polished resort tracks rarely can: a real sense of where you actually are.
