Merriwa sits in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales, a quiet agricultural town on the edge of the Liverpool Plains where wheat and cattle country stretches to every horizon. The golf club here is the kind of place that holds a rural community together — generations of locals who know every bounce and break, and visitors who stumble upon it during a drive through the region and leave glad they stopped.
Outback-adjacent courses like this one tend to play firm and fast across open, sun-baked ground, where the wind off the plains matters as much as any hazard the layout throws at you. The natural contours of the land do much of the design work, and the turf conditions shift noticeably with the seasons in a climate that swings between dry summers and cooler winters.
An 18-hole course in a town this size is a genuine community asset — no small thing. If you're passing through the Upper Hunter, it's worth pulling over.
