Cedar sits in the heart of the Leelanau Peninsula, one of Michigan's most quietly beautiful corners — a finger of land jutting into Lake Michigan where cherry orchards line the back roads and the Manitou Islands float on the horizon. It's the kind of place where the landscape does most of the talking, and Manitou Passage Golf Club takes its name from the strait separating those islands from the peninsula's western shore.
The Leelanau Peninsula has developed a modest but genuine golf identity, with several courses making use of the rolling, glacially shaped terrain that defines this part of northern Michigan. Rounds here tend to play out against a backdrop of hardwoods, open meadows, and the subtle elevation changes left behind by the last ice age — conditions that reward course management over raw power.
As a destination, Cedar is close enough to Traverse City to share in that area's reputation as a legitimate golf hub, yet far enough removed to offer a calmer, more local feel. Manitou Passage fits that mold: a place where northern Michigan's natural character does as much work as the architecture.
