Perched on the hillside above the Ecclesbourne Valley, Chevin Golf Club takes its name from the distinctive ridge that defines this corner of Derbyshire — the same Chevin that walkers and cyclists have long claimed as their own. Founded in 1894, it is one of the older clubs in the county, and its moorland-meets-parkland character reflects the transitional landscape here, where the Peak District begins to soften toward the broader midlands.
The terrain does most of the design work. Elevation changes are significant and genuine, offering views across to Wirksworth and the Derwent Valley on a clear day, while the turf plays firm and fast in the way that upland Derbyshire courses tend to. A par of 70 signals a layout that rewards precision over power — the course is not trying to exhaust you with length but with angles, gradients, and a certain unforgiving honesty.
Duffield itself is a pleasant village just north of Derby, well connected but far enough removed to feel like proper countryside. Chevin sits firmly in the private members' tradition — a club with roots, a loyal local following, and a course that earns its reputation through character rather than spectacle.
