Durango sits in the Animas River valley at roughly 6,500 feet, where the San Juan Mountains rise sharply in every direction and the high-desert air can make a mid-iron behave like a long iron on sea-level courses. Hillcrest Golf Club occupies the mesa above the city, which means sweeping panoramas across the valley and a layout that plays firm and fast through most of the season. Elevation, afternoon wind, and the thin air combine to make distance management a genuinely interesting variable here.
The course is a public facility with deep roots in the Durango community — the kind of place where locals play year-round when the calendar allows and the tee sheet fills up on summer weekends with a reliable mix of residents and visitors passing through the Four Corners region. That democratic, everyday character is part of its appeal.
Durango itself is a railroad and outdoor-recreation town with a personality that leans rugged and unpretentious, and Hillcrest reflects that honestly. You won't find manicured excess here, but you will find genuine mountain golf with real scenery and the kind of uncomplicated round that reminds you why the game is worth playing.
