Few golf clubs carry more institutional weight in Japanese golf than 東京ゴルフ倶楽部 (Tokyo Golf Club). Founded in 1914, it is one of the oldest golf clubs in Japan, and its current course in Sayama — designed by the English architect Charles Henry Alison, who visited Japan in 1930 — stands as one of the most historically significant layouts in the country. Alison's influence on Japanese golf course design was profound, and Tokyo Golf Club represents arguably his finest work on Japanese soil, featuring the deep, steep-faced bunkers that became his calling card and earned the nickname "Alison bunkers" throughout Japan.

The course occupies the wooded Sayama hills of Saitama Prefecture, northwest of central Tokyo, where the Kanto Plain begins to fold into gentle upland terrain. Mature trees frame tight corridors, and the routing makes intelligent use of natural elevation changes to create a consistently engaging test.

As one of Japan's most prestigious private members' clubs, Tokyo Golf Club has hosted the Japan Open multiple times and remains a benchmark against which serious Japanese courses are measured. Access is essentially by member invitation only, making a round here a genuine rarity.
