Few golf destinations in New England carry the particular atmosphere of Newport, Vermont — a small city perched at the southern tip of Lake Memphremagog, a long, glacially carved lake that stretches north across the Canadian border into Quebec. The landscape here is genuinely dramatic: the Green Mountains rise to the west, the lake dominates the eastern horizon, and the light in summer has a clarity that belongs entirely to the Northeast Kingdom. It is remote country, and that remoteness is part of what makes finding a round of golf here feel like a discovery.
Newport Country Club is a private member club serving a community that takes its golf seriously despite — or perhaps because of — the short northern season. The Memphremagog region draws visitors for sailing and fishing in summer and skiing in winter, and the club sits within that broader outdoor culture.
A par 72 layout of 18 holes in this terrain almost certainly means elevation change, long views, and the kind of course that rewards local knowledge as much as raw ball-striking.
