Tom Fazio designed Champion Hills Club in the early 1990s, and it stands as one of his most celebrated private mountain layouts — a course that regularly appears on lists of the best golf experiences in North Carolina. The club sits in the Blue Ridge Mountains outside Hendersonville, and Fazio used the ridgelines, elevation changes, and native hardwood forest not as obstacles to work around but as the raw material of the design itself. The result is a course that feels genuinely carved from the landscape rather than imposed upon it.
Playing Champion Hills demands real shot-making. The mountain terrain creates dramatic uphill and downhill lies throughout the round, and Fazio's routing rewards players who can shape the ball and manage their way around rather than simply overpower it. The par 71 configuration keeps you honest — this is not a layout where brute length solves many problems.
Hendersonville sits at roughly 2,200 feet in the Southern Appalachians, meaning summers are reliably cool and the fall color is exceptional. Champion Hills is a private members' club, and that exclusivity shapes the experience: well-conditioned turf, unhurried rounds, and a setting that genuinely earns the mountain golf reputation western North Carolina carries.
