Montrose sits at roughly 5,800 feet in the Uncompahgre Valley, where the Colorado Plateau gives way to the western slope of the Rockies. It's a part of Colorado that serious golfers often overlook in favor of the mountain resort corridors, but the high desert here offers something those destinations rarely deliver: wide skies, dry air, and a playing season that stretches well beyond what the higher elevations allow. The surrounding landscape is defined by sage, red-rock terrain, and views toward the San Juan Mountains to the south and east.
Cornerstone Club is an 18-hole layout serving the Montrose area, and as a private or semi-private facility, it occupies a distinct role in a region where public golf options are relatively limited. Western Slope courses tend to reward shot-making over raw power — the thin air adds distance, but firm, sun-baked turf and persistent afternoon winds demand accuracy and course management.
For visiting golfers, Montrose also serves as a gateway to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, making a round here a natural complement to exploring one of Colorado's most dramatic and undervisited landscapes.
