Few golf destinations in the Midwest carry the civic weight that Harbor Shores does. Designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 2010, the course was built as a centerpiece of an ambitious redevelopment effort for Benton Harbor, a city that had faced decades of economic hardship. The project restored and repurposed a former public park along the Lake Michigan shoreline, and the PGA Tour took notice almost immediately — Harbor Shores has hosted the Senior PGA Championship multiple times, bringing major championship golf back to southwest Michigan.
The layout winds through a striking mix of terrain: dune grasses, wetlands, the Paw Paw River, and direct exposure to Lake Michigan. That lakeside exposure means wind is rarely a courtesy, and the closing stretch along the water is as visually dramatic as anything the region offers. The par-71 configuration suits a design that prizes strategy and shot-making over sheer length.
Benton Harbor sits at the heart of Michigan's "Harbor Country," where the lake moderates the climate enough to support a surprisingly long golf season and a wine-country culture that has quietly made this corner of the state a destination in its own right.
