The Peninsula has its share of exclusive clubs, but Green Hills Country Club occupies a particularly coveted perch in Millbrae — a private enclave wedged between the coastal hills of San Mateo County and the perpetual hum of SFO just to the north. Membership here is a genuine privilege, and the course itself makes clear why the waiting is worth it.
At 6,211 yards from the tips, the numbers read modestly, but a slope of 138 and a course rating of 70.7 tell a more honest story. This is not a course that yields to length alone. The terrain rolling off the Peninsula foothills is restless and uneven, and the reliable marine layer that drifts in off the Bay keeps conditions cool, the rough dense, and the greens quick. Positioning off the tee matters far more than power here.
Par 71 is a detail worth noting — one fewer par five means less opportunity to manufacture birdies and more exposure to the course's teeth. Green Hills rewards patience, local knowledge, and a reliable short game. Members who have played it for years still find ways to be humbled.
For those lucky enough to get on, it offers something increasingly rare in the Bay Area: a mature, demanding, private club experience that doesn't need a famous name to justify its reputation.
