Davis sits in the heart of the Central Valley, flat agricultural country where the Sierra Nevada rises on one horizon and the Coast Range on the other. It's a university town — UC Davis dominates the civic identity — and the local golf scene reflects that: unpretentious, accessible, and well-used by a mix of students, faculty, and year-round residents who take advantage of some 270 days of sunshine. The valley's heat peaks hard in July and August, but the shoulder seasons here are genuinely excellent for golf.
Wildhorse is a public course, which matters in a community like Davis where private clubs are not the dominant model. The "wildhorse" name hints at a design intent to break from the generic Central Valley mold — open rangeland character, perhaps native grasses and naturalistic shaping rather than the manicured sameness of resort-style layouts. Whether the course fully delivers on that promise is a conversation worth having on the ground.
