Few golf destinations in Mexico carry the design pedigree of Los Cabos, and La Querencia stands among the region's most refined private club experiences. Designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 2004, the course is built into the rugged high desert terrain above the town of San José del Cabo, where arroyos cut through native scrub and the land rolls with a natural drama that Nicklaus used to full advantage. The layout rewards strategic thinking over raw power, with generous landing areas that tighten considerably as you approach well-guarded greens.
The setting itself does much of the work. At elevation above the coastal plain, views of the Sierra de la Laguna mountains frame the back nine while glimpses of the Sea of Cortez appear on the horizon. The desert vegetation — cardon cactus, palo blanco, wild sage — is left largely intact between fairways, giving rounds a feeling of genuine wilderness despite the polished conditioning.
La Querencia is a private residential club, and that exclusivity shapes everything about the experience: unhurried pace, meticulous upkeep, and a membership culture built around the idea that Cabo golf can be something quieter and more considered than the resort spectacle found a few miles west along the corridor.
