Staten Island's only public 18-hole course carries a history that stretches back to 1928, when La Tourette was established on land that is now part of the New York City Parks system. Designed by John Van Kleeck, the layout occupies a genuinely rugged stretch of the Staten Island Greenbelt — one of the largest expanses of urban parkland on the East Coast — and the terrain shows it. Elevation changes, mature hardwoods, and the kind of natural contour that city planners couldn't manufacture give La Tourette a character that belies its municipal address.
For a Parks Department course, the routing holds up surprisingly well. Tree-lined fairways demand accuracy off the tee, and the hilly ground keeps approach shots honest throughout the round. It plays longer and more demanding than many expect walking in, and the back nine in particular winds through some of the Greenbelt's denser woodland.
Staten Island is the borough that New York City sometimes forgets, and La Tourette is the golf course that rewards those willing to make the trip across the Verrazano. It's the borough's golfing anchor, and a legitimate test by any public-course standard.
