Few American golf clubs carry a name as evocative of place as The Aquidneck Club. Aquidneck Island is the proper name for the landmass most people simply call Newport — home to the Gilded Age mansions, America's Cup sailing history, and some of the oldest golf culture in the United States. Newport Country Club, just a few miles south, hosted the first U.S. Open in 1895, and that heritage casts a long shadow over everything on the island. Playing golf here means playing in genuinely storied territory.
Portsmouth sits at the northern end of Aquidneck Island, quieter and less trafficked than Newport itself, with open farmland, tidal views, and the kind of unhurried Rhode Island character that the tourist-facing south end has largely traded away. The Aquidneck Club occupies this calmer corner of the island, and whatever the layout brings, the surrounding landscape of Narragansett Bay and coastal New England provides a compelling backdrop.
A par 71 suggests at least one departure from the standard four-par-5 template — a small design detail that often signals interesting strategic thinking on at least one hole. Beyond that, this is a course worth discovering on its own terms.
