Upper Michigan's Upper Peninsula carries a particular kind of wildness — dense forests, dramatic elevation changes, and a short summer season that makes every round feel earned. Timberstone, the Jerry Matthews-designed public course that opened in 1997 in Iron Mountain, leans fully into that rugged setting. Matthews carved the layout through the region's characteristic hardwood forest and glacially shaped terrain, producing a course that demands genuine shot-making: fairways that bend and fall through stands of birch and pine, and greens that reward players who think their way around rather than simply overpower the land.
Timberstone has consistently ranked among the finest public courses in Michigan, a distinction that carries real weight in a state with one of the strongest golf cultures in the Midwest. Its reputation draws players well beyond the immediate area — no small thing for a destination this far north.
Iron Mountain sits just across the Menominee River from Wisconsin, deep in mining country. The region's golfing window is compressed but glorious, and Timberstone makes a compelling case for making the trip.
