Few resort courses in western Pennsylvania carry the reputation that Mystic Rock has earned. Designed by Pete Dye and opened in 1994 as part of the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, it quickly became one of the most celebrated resort layouts in the region — a Dye design that leans into drama rather than apologizing for it. Elevation changes, forced carries, water on multiple holes, and the architect's trademark railroad-tie bulkheads give the course a demanding, theatrical personality that rewards careful course management over raw power.
The course gained national visibility when it hosted the PGA Tour's 84 Lumber Classic from 2003 through 2006, with winners including Vijay Singh. That tournament exposure confirmed what regional golfers already suspected: Mystic Rock plays at a genuinely serious level and demands respect from the first tee.
Farmington sits in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, a stretch of rolling forested hills that also claims Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob among its landmarks. The terrain gives Dye's routing plenty of natural drama to work with, and the Nemacolin resort setting means the overall experience leans decidedly toward the indulgent end of the golf spectrum.
