Tim Cate designed Cape Fear National, which opened in 2009 as the centerpiece of the Brunswick Forest master-planned community just outside Wilmington. Cate, a North Carolina architect who also created the well-regarded Meadowlands and Crow Creek courses nearby, routed the layout through a classic coastal Carolina landscape — longleaf pines, wetlands, and the kind of marsh-edged corridors that make the Lower Cape Fear region feel distinct from the Piedmont or mountain golf you find farther inland. The course has earned consistent recognition on North Carolina's "best courses" lists and draws both residents and destination players making the short drive from Wilmington.
Leland sits just across the Cape Fear River from Wilmington, a city with genuine historical depth — Colonial-era port history, Civil War significance, and a downtown riverfront that gives the area more character than a typical retirement-belt golf corridor.
As a community course anchoring a large residential development, Cape Fear National carries an upscale daily-fee feel: well-maintained, welcoming to visitors, and designed to be played repeatedly without growing stale.
