Marton Golf Course

Bulls sits at the northern edge of the Manawatū plain, a flat, wind-scoured farming town where State Highway 1 and State Highway 3 cross paths and most travellers barely slow down. Marton Golf Course, a few kilometres down the road in the neighbouring town of Marton, serves the rural communities of this part of Rangitīkei — a landscape of sheep pastures, poplars, and big open skies that give little shelter from the prevailing southerlies rolling up from Cook Strait. Golf in this corner of the North Island has always been a community affair, built and maintained by farmers and townsfolk rather than resort developers.

The course plays across typical Rangitīkei country — relatively flat, open terrain where wind is the great leveller and accurate ball-striking matters more than power. Conditions can shift quickly with the seasons, the kikuyu and ryegrass fairways playing firm and fast in the dry Manawatū summers and considerably softer through winter.

For visitors, this is grassroots New Zealand golf at its most genuine — affordable, unhurried, and welcoming. A round here is less about ticking off a bucket-list venue and more about experiencing the quiet rhythm of rural club golf, where a friendly game with locals and a beer in the clubhouse afterward are as much part of the day as the scorecard.
