South Molle Island Golf Course

South Molle Island sits in the heart of the Whitsunday archipelago, roughly 5 kilometres off the Airlie Beach coast, and its golf course is about as remote and scenically dramatic as recreational golf gets in Australia. The island was once a popular resort destination, with the layout carved into the island's hilly interior and fringing terrain — meaning elevation changes, thick tropical vegetation, and glimpses of the Coral Sea and surrounding islands are constant companions on the round. It is a short course by any measure, but the terrain ensures it plays far more memorably than the yardage alone would suggest.

The Whitsundays' tropical climate brings humidity, lush fairways, and the occasional afternoon storm rolling in off the Coral Sea. Wildlife — including wallabies that have become something of a signature presence on the island — shares the course freely.

South Molle's resort history has been complicated in recent years; the island's facilities were significantly impacted by Cyclone Debbie in 2017, and the site has undergone a long redevelopment process since. Visitors should verify current access and conditions before making the trip.
