Port Orange sits in the shadow of Daytona Beach, a quieter residential community where the golf tends toward the accessible and the scenic rather than the tournament-tough. Cypress Head is a semi-private layout carved through the mature scrub and wetlands typical of Volusia County's interior, where Spanish moss, cypress stands, and still-water hazards define the landscape as much as any architect's shaping. The terrain is flat, as it is throughout coastal Central Florida, but the dense vegetation creates a sense of enclosure and separation between holes that keeps the round feeling intimate.
Arthur Hills designed the course, opening it in the early 1990s as part of a planned residential community — a common model along Florida's Intracoastal corridor. Hills was adept at using natural features to create interest on otherwise level ground, and Cypress Head reflects that sensibility: water comes into play throughout, and the cypress-lined corridors demand straightness without punishing every mistake unfairly.
The club draws a mix of locals and Daytona-area visitors looking for a round that rewards thoughtful play over raw power. It's a solid, honest Florida track.
