Few private clubs in Hawaii carry the word "Royal" without earning it. Royal Kunia Country Club sits in the upland plateau above Waipahu on Oahu's central plain, occupying terrain that was once pineapple and sugarcane country — the agricultural heart of an island most visitors never see beyond the coastal resorts. That elevation and interior position give it a character distinct from the breezy, oceanfront layouts that tend to dominate Hawaii's golf reputation.
Robin Nelson, one of Hawaii's most prolific and thoughtful course architects, designed Royal Kunia, and the result is widely considered among his finest work on the islands. The course draws on the natural contours of the plateau, with sweeping views toward the Waianae and Koolau mountain ranges framing rounds that feel genuinely removed from Honolulu's bustle. It has appeared on national ranking lists and earned consistent respect from serious Hawaii golfers.
As a members-only club, Royal Kunia maintains an intimacy and conditioning standard that resort courses rarely match. For those fortunate enough to play it, the combination of interior Oahu scenery, strong design, and private-club pace makes it a meaningful contrast to the island's more familiar seaside offerings.
