Few American courses carry the weight of history that Oak Hill's West Course does. Designed by Donald Ross and opened in 1926, it has been substantially refined over the decades — most notably by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and later by Tom Fazio — yet it retains the cerebral, precision-demanding character Ross instilled from the start. The course has hosted more combined major championships than almost any other venue in the country, including multiple U.S. Opens, PGA Championships, a Ryder Cup, and a Senior Open, making it one of the most tournament-tested layouts in the world. Xander Schauffele's 2023 PGA Championship victory here reminded a new generation why Oak Hill commands such reverence.
The setting is distinctly Northeastern — mature oak canopies, firm bentgrass fairways that reward a thinking player, and the kind of late-summer humidity Rochester delivers that makes every shot feel consequential. The course plays shorter than its reputation but demands relentless accuracy.
For serious students of American golf architecture, Oak Hill is pilgrimage territory. Its members play one of the sport's genuine cathedrals.
