Frye Island sits in the middle of Sebago Lake, Maine's deepest lake and one of the largest in New England, which means getting here requires a short ferry ride from the town of Standish. That alone filters the crowd — this is not a course you stumble upon. The island itself is a private, seasonal community, and the golf course serves the residents and their guests, giving it a genuinely unhurried, members-at-leisure atmosphere that's increasingly rare.
Sebago Lake's surroundings are classic western Maine: dense mixed forest, clean water, and the kind of low humidity and cool temperatures that make a late-summer round genuinely pleasant. The layout works with the island's wooded terrain, meaning tree-lined corridors and elevation changes that demand accuracy over raw power.
For anyone lucky enough to get on, this is golf as a getaway within a getaway — a round inseparable from the lake, the ferry crossing, and the sense that you've traveled somewhere a little apart from the rest of the world.
