Tarumae Country Club is one of Hokkaido's most celebrated layouts, occupying dramatic terrain on the slopes of Mount Tarumae — an active stratovolcano rising from the Shikotsu-Tōya National Park southwest of Tomakomai. The course takes its name and its character directly from this volcanic geography: fairways roll across rugged, naturally contoured land shaped by centuries of lava flows and ash deposits, with the cone of Tarumae itself forming an ever-present backdrop that few courses anywhere in the world can match for sheer visual drama.

The design makes excellent use of the native landscape — stands of birch and Yezo spruce frame the corridors, and the volcanic soil drains exceptionally well, keeping the course playable even after Hokkaido's heavy summer rains. The routing demands thoughtful course management rather than raw power, with elevation changes and prevailing winds off Lake Shikotsu adding strategic complexity that rewards multiple visits.

Tomakomai sits on Hokkaido's Pacific coast roughly 50 kilometers south of Sapporo, giving Tarumae CC relatively easy access from the island's major city. It is regarded as one of the finer private clubs on an island that takes its golf seriously, attracting members and guests who appreciate the rare combination of genuine wilderness surroundings and a well-maintained, characterful test.
