Few mountain golf experiences in the American West match what Clear Creek Tahoe has built in the pine forests above Carson City. Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw and opened in 2014, the course sits at roughly 5,000 feet in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, and the Coore-Crenshaw philosophy is written into every routing decision — minimal earthmoving, ground-level strategy, fairways that invite the running game, and greens that reward players who think before they swing. It has drawn immediate comparisons to the firm, golden-age-influenced work the partnership has done at Sand Hills and Friar's Head, and regularly appears on national top-100 lists.
The setting does a great deal of the work. Pinyon pine and sagebrush frame the holes against dramatic views of the Carson Valley below, and the high-desert air keeps the ball in the air longer than sea-level golfers expect.
Clear Creek is a private club, so access runs through membership or guest invitation — but for those who do play it, the course consistently earns the kind of quiet reverence that serious golfers reserve for a handful of places in their lives.
