Few golf courses anywhere in the British Isles can claim a setting quite like this one. Whalsay is a small island in the Shetland archipelago, reached by ferry from the Mainland, and the golf club here holds a genuine distinction: it sits among the most northerly 18-hole courses in the world. That geographical fact alone shapes everything about the experience — the wide, salt-laced skies, the near-treeless moorland terrain, the extraordinary summer light that lingers well into the evening, and the wind, which is rarely absent and never truly tamed.
Shetland's landscape is raw and elemental, defined by peat moorland, exposed hillside, and constant Atlantic weather. Golf here asks for creativity and shot-making that a more sheltered parkland course never demands. The terrain dictates the routing rather than the other way around, which gives the course an honest, unforced character.
