Callippe Preserve sits on the rolling eastern hills above Pleasanton, where the Livermore Valley opens up and the Diablo Range frames nearly every hole. Designed by Ted Robinson Jr. and opened in 2002, the municipal course takes its name from the callippe silverspot butterfly, a federally threatened species whose habitat shares the property — an unusual distinction that shaped how the land was developed and gives the course a genuine ecological identity.
The layout plays through open grassland and native oak stands, with elevation changes that reward shot-shaping and make distance management more interesting than a flat scorecard reading would suggest. Wind is a consistent factor here, funneled through the valley in classic Northern California fashion, and it can completely alter which holes feel manageable and which bite back. Several holes on the back nine offer sweeping views across the valley toward Pleasanton Ridge.
As a City of Pleasanton facility, Callippe serves a broad cross-section of the East Bay golf community — competitive enough to challenge low handicappers but accessible enough that it stays busy on weekends with players of every level.
