Pinnaroo sits in the far southeast of South Australia, deep in the Mallee country where the landscape is defined by scrubby eucalyptus, red sandy soil, and the kind of flat, open horizons that stretch uninterrupted toward the Victorian border. It's wheat and sheep country, and the golf club here is exactly the kind of institution that holds a rural community together — a volunteer-run, member-owned operation where the game is played seriously but the atmosphere is decidedly unpretentious.
Like most Mallee courses, Pinnaroo almost certainly plays on sand scrapes rather than grass greens, a traditional and practical response to the region's hot, dry summers and limited water resources.
