Few clubs in England carry the quiet authority of East Devon Golf Club. Founded in 1902, it occupies a stretch of cliff-top heathland above the Jurassic Coast — a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of red sandstone cliffs and sweeping sea views that frames virtually every hole. The course was designed in the tradition of the great early English heathland layouts, and its combination of heather, gorse, and firm downland turf has kept it genuinely challenging and visually distinctive for well over a century.
East Devon sits just above Budleigh Salterton, a small, unhurried seaside town on the south Devon coast with the kind of character that feels increasingly rare. The club itself has a reputation as one of the finest and most underrated tests in the South West — a course that rewards local knowledge, precise ball-striking, and a respect for the wind off the Channel, which can transform the same holes from one round to the next.
At par 70, East Devon is not a course that punishes length so much as it exposes loose thinking. The routing uses the natural contours of the headland shrewdly, and first-time visitors almost always leave surprised by how much the course got under their skin.
