Few courses on the Eastern Shore put you this close to the water. Rum Pointe occupies a dramatic piece of land along Sinepuxent Bay on Maryland's lower peninsula, and its bayside setting gives it a character that separates it from the inland resort tracks crowding the Ocean City corridor. The design is the work of Pete and P.B. Dye, and the Dye fingerprints are everywhere — railroad ties, firm and fast conditions, holes that play differently depending on how the wind is moving off the water, which on any given day can be a significant factor indeed.
The course has built a strong regional reputation as one of the better public-access options in a stretch of coast better known for miniature golf and boardwalk fare. It rewards shot-shaping and course management over raw distance, and the bayside views on several holes give it a visual drama that goes well beyond what the scorecard suggests.
Berlin itself is a small historic town just inland from Ocean City — unhurried, genuine, and a welcome contrast to the resort strip a few miles east. Playing Rum Pointe feels like finding the serious side of a destination better known for summer crowds.
