Doonbeg Golf Course

Few courses carry the weight of place quite like Doonbeg. Opened in 2002 and designed by Greg Norman, the layout occupies a spectacular stretch of Atlantic coastline in County Clare, threaded through towering sand dunes along Doughmore Bay. The site was so naturally gifted that Norman later said his primary job was simply to disturb it as little as possible. The course earned immediate international acclaim and held a place among the world's top layouts within years of opening. Donald Trump acquired the property in 2014, investing heavily in its renovation and rebranding it Trump International Golf Links & Hotel, Ireland — though locals still tend to call it simply Doonbeg.

County Clare is remote in the best sense: wild Atlantic coastline, stone walls, the Cliffs of Moher a short drive north, and a pace of life that makes the golf feel like part of something larger than a round. The village of Doonbeg itself is tiny, which only amplifies the sense that this course exists somewhere the world hasn't entirely caught up with yet.

The golf is links in its truest form — wind-exposed, firm, and unpredictable, demanding creativity and humility in equal measure. The par-3 14th, which plays from high dunes down toward the sea, is among the most visually arresting short holes in Irish golf. Guests staying at the lodge can walk to the first tee, and that seamlessness of setting, accommodation, and golf is a large part of what makes Doonbeg so memorable.
