Few American golf clubs carry a name with more architectural weight. The Robert Trent Jones Golf Club on Lake Manassas was built in 1991 specifically to host the Presidents Cup, the biennial team competition between the United States and an international squad drawn from outside Europe. It did exactly that in 1994 — the inaugural edition of the event — and has returned to host the matches multiple times since, cementing its status as one of the most consequential tournament venues on the East Coast.
The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in one of his final major commissions, and it reflects the full sweep of his philosophy: bold water features, large contoured greens, and strategic bunkering that rewards aggressive play while punishing miscalculation. The lake itself is woven throughout the layout in a way that makes water a constant psychological presence, not merely a backdrop.
Lake Manassas sits in Prince William County, about 35 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., in the rolling Piedmont countryside of Northern Virginia. The club is private, and its identity has always been less about exclusivity than about purpose — it was built for a specific global stage, and it continues to occupy that role.
