The Links at Fancourt

Few golf destinations on the African continent carry the weight of Fancourt's reputation. The Links, designed by Gary Player and opened in 2000, was built on what had been a flat agricultural plain on the outskirts of George — a deliberate engineering feat that transformed featureless farmland into a rumpled, dune-like landscape evoking the great seaside linksland of Britain and Ireland. It hosted the 2003 Presidents Cup, where the American and International teams halved the competition after a playoff, making it one of the most dramatic finishes in that event's history. Player himself considers it among his finest design work.

The course plays exposed and wind-dependent, with fescue-style rough, pot bunkers, and ground game options that reward creative shot-making over pure power. It is harder than it looks on calm days and genuinely brutal when the Cape's notorious southeaster arrives.

George sits in the heart of the Garden Route, where a mild, temperate climate and lush surroundings make it one of South Africa's most concentrated golf regions. Fancourt's broader estate adds hotel, spa, and 3 additional courses to the picture.
