大津カントリークラブ is one of the established private clubs serving the greater Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe metropolitan corridor, situated in Otsu — the capital of Shiga Prefecture and the city that wraps around the southern and eastern shores of Lake Biwa, Japan's largest freshwater lake. The East Course (東コース) is the club's more demanding layout, playing through the rolling, wooded hills that characterize this part of the Kinki highlands. Tree-lined fairways, precise approach angles, and firm, well-maintained bentgrass greens demand the kind of disciplined ball-striking that Japanese parkland courses are known for rewarding.
Otsu occupies a unique position in Japanese culture — historic gateway between the old capitals of Nara and Kyoto, and a city whose natural backdrop lends the surrounding golf to a quiet, unhurried atmosphere unusual for a course this close to major urban centers. Lake Biwa's moderating influence keeps the climate relatively mild through much of the season.
As a members' club in the tradition of Japan's postwar private golf boom, 大津CC maintains the meticulous grooming standards and formal playing culture that define that era. Visitors with access will find a course that rewards patience and course management over power.
