Few golf settings in Australia demand as much attention from the eyes as this one. Hamilton Island sits in the heart of the Whitsundays, a sailing and resort destination strung across the Coral Sea off the Queensland coast, where the vegetation runs thick with tropical growth and the waters between the islands shift between deep blue and brilliant turquoise depending on the light and tide. The golf course occupies Dent Island, a separate landmass accessed by a short ferry ride from Hamilton Island itself — a commute that sets the round apart before a single shot is struck.
The course was designed by Peter Thomson, the five-time Open Champion and one of Australia's most distinguished golf architects, and its routing takes genuine advantage of Dent Island's hilly terrain and coastal exposure. Elevation changes are real and consequential, offering views across the Whitsunday Passage that rival anything the sport has to offer anywhere in the world.
This is unambiguously resort golf, but resort golf of a serious kind — isolated, scenic, and memorable enough that the setting never overwhelms the game so much as it amplifies it.
