Few golf courses on earth can claim a setting quite like this one. Avalon sits on Santa Catalina Island, roughly 22 miles off the Southern California coast, reachable only by ferry or seaplane — which means arriving to play here already feels like an event. The island's interior is largely undeveloped preserve, and the course occupies terrain that rolls and pitches through the hills above the harbor town, with views that extend across the channel on a clear day.
A par 64 tells you something important: this is a layout built around short holes, almost certainly heavy on par 3s and short par 4s, shaped by the island's steep, constrained topography rather than any desire to host a stroke-play championship. That's not a limitation — it's the whole point. Precision and creativity matter more than distance here, and the elevation changes do the work that length might do elsewhere.
Catalina itself draws visitors who come for the wildlife, the Art Deco architecture of the Casino ballroom, and a pace of life that feels genuinely removed from the mainland. Golf here is part of that same unhurried character.
