Few public courses in Connecticut carry the reputation that Great River Golf Club has built since opening in 2001. Designed by Tommy Fazio — nephew of the legendary George Fazio and cousin to Tom Fazio — the course was carved through a stretch of wetlands and meadows along the Housatonic River valley in Milford, and the routing makes full use of that natural drama. Water comes into play on a significant number of holes, and the layout rewards players who respect course management over raw distance.
Great River earned serious attention early in its life, landing on multiple "best public courses" lists in the Northeast and drawing comparisons to private clubs in a region that has no shortage of them. The conditioning and design ambition set it apart from the typical daily-fee offering in southern Connecticut.
Milford sits on Long Island Sound between New Haven and Bridgeport, giving the area a coastal character that influences the climate — expect firm turf in summer and winds that can reframe the challenge entirely depending on the day.
