Few courses wear their inspiration as openly as Old Macdonald, the fifth course at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort and a deliberate tribute to Charles Blair Macdonald, the father of American golf course architecture. Designed by Tom Doak and Jim Urbina and opened in 2010, it draws directly from Macdonald's template philosophy — recreating and reinterpreting the great strategic hole designs he borrowed from the golden age of Scottish and English links: the Redan, the Alps, the Punchbowl, the Cape. The result is something genuinely unusual: a course built from historical quotations that somehow feels entirely of its place.
And the place is Bandon, on Oregon's southern coast — one of the most celebrated golf destinations in the world, where the land rolls in great sweeping humps above the Pacific, winds shift without warning, and turf plays firm and fast. Old Macdonald sits farther inland than its siblings, featuring enormous greens and massive, rumpled fairways that demand ground-game thinking as much as aerial precision.
For anyone serious about golf's architectural heritage, this is not merely a round — it's an education. Among a resort full of exceptional courses, Old Macdonald holds its own through sheer intellectual ambition.
