Alric Mackenzie designed Cavendish in 1925, giving the Derbyshire Peak District one of its most distinctive layouts. The course sits high above the spa town of Buxton at around 1,200 feet, and that elevation shapes everything — the turf drains fast, the air is sharp, and the views across the moors stretch far enough to distract even the most focused player. MacKenzie brought the same strategic instincts here that he applied at Augusta National and Cypress Point, routing holes that work with the natural contours of the hillside rather than against them.
The par 68 is not a compromise but a deliberate choice, reflecting terrain that demanded shorter, more imaginative holes over brute length. Several holes play across or along steep valleys, demanding precise shot-shaping and club selection that pure distance cannot substitute for. Cavendish rewards course management and punishes complacency in a way longer parkland courses rarely can.
Buxton itself sits at the southern edge of the Peak District, England's first national park, and the setting lends Cavendish a rugged, upland character that is a world away from the manicured lowland courses of the English Midlands.
