Few golf clubs in Australia carry the institutional weight of NSW Golf Club. Founded in 1928 and designed by Alister MacKenzie — the Scottish architect behind Augusta National and Cypress Point — the course at La Perouse occupies one of the most dramatic pieces of land ever given over to golf. MacKenzie routed his design across headlands above Botany Bay, where the Pacific Ocean frames virtually every outlook and the salt wind off the water is a constant, uninvited playing partner.
The course is consistently ranked among Australia's top 5, and its reputation rests on MacKenzie's characteristic genius: strategic bunkering, ground that encourages and rewards the running game, and holes where the correct angle of attack matters far more than raw distance. Several holes play along clifftop edges where the consequences of a wayward shot are immediate and unambiguous.
La Perouse itself is a historic corner of Sydney's south, named for the French explorer who anchored in Botany Bay in 1788. The surrounding coastal scrub and sandstone give the club a wild, elemental feeling that no amount of city proximity can erode.
