Few country clubs in New Jersey carry the institutional weight of Canoe Brook. Founded in 1901, the club has deep roots in the suburban Essex County corridor, drawing its membership from the affluent communities that grew up along the old Delaware, Lackawanna and Western rail line. Short Hills itself is one of the more quietly distinguished addresses in the state — manicured, wooded, and close enough to Manhattan to attract serious golfers with the means to pursue the game properly.
Canoe Brook operates 2 courses, and the North has historically been regarded as the more demanding and prestigious of the pair. The layout moves through mature hardwood forest and gentle New Jersey Piedmont terrain, offering the kind of measured, strategic test that rewards course management over raw power. The club hosted the USGA Senior Open in 1993, a credential that speaks to the quality of its conditioning and the integrity of its design.
This is old-money, old-school private golf — well-maintained, unhurried, and steeped in a century of member tradition. Guests arrive here by invitation only.
