Few courses in suburban Detroit carry the architectural pedigree of Orchards Golf Club. The layout was designed by Arthur Hills, one of Michigan's most celebrated golf architects, and opened in the mid-1990s as part of a wave of ambitious public-access courses that raised the bar for everyday golfers across the state. Hills shaped the land in Washington Township with a strategic, modern sensibility — generous off the tee in places, demanding around the greens, and consistently rewarding of thoughtful play over raw power.
Washington Township sits in Macomb County, northeast of Detroit in Michigan's southern Lower Peninsula, where the terrain transitions from the flat suburban sprawl closer to the city into gently rolling farmland. That topography gave Hills room to work, and the course moves with a natural rhythm that belies its suburban address. Mature trees, water features, and well-contoured fairways give Orchards a polished feel without tipping into overdesign.
As a public facility, Orchards has long served as a genuine destination layout rather than a convenience round — the kind of course Detroit-area golfers plan a day around rather than simply squeeze in.
