Few private clubs in America occupy a setting quite like this one. Maui Country Club sits in Paia, a small, characterful town on the island's north shore — a stretch of coastline better known to the world for windsurfing and big-wave surfing than for golf. The club has been a quiet fixture of Maui's social and sporting life for well over a century, making it one of the oldest golf institutions in Hawaii, a state that came late to the game's formal traditions.
The north shore's terrain is distinct from the resort corridors of Wailea or Kaanapali. Trade winds off the Pacific blow with real conviction here, and the landscape carries the rugged, working-island character of upcountry Maui rather than the manicured polish of a destination resort. That wind is a constant fourth playing partner, turning straightforward holes into genuine puzzles.
As a private members' club, Maui Country Club exists primarily to serve its community — a rare, locally rooted retreat in a place the golf world more often associates with luxury resort packages.
